What is the difference between forex commissions and spreads?
Spreads are the difference between the bid and ask price of a currency pair and represent the basic trading cost in forex. Commissions are additional fees charged by some brokers, usually on ECN accounts, for executing trades. For example, an STP account may only charge spreads of 1.5 pips, while an ECN account might offer raw spreads as low as 0.1 pips plus a commission of $7 per lot. The total cost is the combination of spreads and commissions. Generally, ECN accounts are more transparent but may be more suitable for high-volume traders who benefit from tighter spreads.
