Union rejects contract, strike imminent
On August 3, 2025, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), representing 3,200 Boeing employees in the St. Louis area, formally rejected Boeing's latest contract proposal and announced that it would begin a strike at midnight on Monday, August 5 ( Reuters report ).
Tom Bolin, a union representative, said workers deserve a contract that "reflects their skills, dedication, and critical role in national defense." Although Boeing's latest proposal includes a 40% average pay increase, IAM believes it fails to address core issues such as senior employees' pay structure, vacation entitlements, and overtime policies.
Boeing responds: Prepare contingency plans and emphasize disappointment
Faced with the strike threat, Boeing took a tough stance and responded quickly. Dan Gillian, vice president of Boeing Air Superiority, said the company had "fully implemented its contingency plans" and was fully prepared for a strike, and was "disappointed" that the workers rejected the proposal.
According to public information, Boeing initially proposed a 20% general wage increase over four years, along with a $5,000 approval bonus, but the union insisted on greater pay adjustments and retaining the current overtime system. While the new proposal is more favorable to senior employees, it still failed to convince the union.
The fighter jet project may be dragged down, and the market needs to be wary of delay risks
The strike affected employees responsible for key production projects including the MQ-25 aerial refueling drone and the new F-47A fighter jet. The F-47A, a key future asset for the US Air Force, is currently undergoing expansion at its manufacturing facility in St. Louis. A labor dispute at this time could have a knock-on impact on delivery schedules, impacting Boeing's defense revenue forecast.
Looking back at the strike at Boeing's commercial aircraft division last year, 33,000 machinists on strike disrupted production for nearly two months, ultimately ending with a 38% pay increase. This context has also made investors pay close attention to whether the current strike will escalate into a longer-term confrontation.

Maintain a neutral observation and pay attention to the progress
Although the strike was relatively small in scale, its involvement in high-end defense manufacturing signals a significant market signal. Investors are advised to pay attention to the following points:
Whether Boeing will launch a new negotiation plan in the short term;
whether the Department of Defense pressured Boeing over contract delays;
Whether the market sees this as a continuation of the ongoing friction between corporate management and labor.
Neutral judgment: The short-term impact of the current incident on Boeing's overall revenue may be limited, but if the strike continues or triggers a chain reaction, it may have a negative impact on the valuation of the defense sector.
Boeing’s labor turmoil has sounded the alarm for defense stocks, and investors need to pay close attention to related progress and the pace of project fulfillment.
